White matter

The WM of the brain and spinal cord is a complex structure which is composed of a vast number of nerve fibers (axons), sheathed with a compact, lipid-rich membrane, the myelin. Besides myelinated axons, white matter contains a variety of supporting cells, the glial cells (astrocytes, microglial cells and oligodendrocytes) that play a major role in structural and trophic support of myelin and axons (for instance, elaboration of the myelin sheath by oligodendrocytes (OLs).
